Dance Styles

All styles of jazz as we know it today can be traced back to its roots in Africa & the Caribbean and is a well loved style of dance all over the world.

The unique fusion of British Isles Clog & Step dancing, with the rhythms of West African drumming & dancing in colonial times, created an ever-evolving art form that continues to flourish today. Tap (metal) plates attached to the toe & heel of shoes makes a percussive sound and is considered a form of music. (Fred Astaire considered himself a percussionist)!

Music Theatre

Hip Hop

Created in the 1970's and involving breaking, locking & popping, sometimes called New Style & Jazz Funk, made popular and growing in popularity by 'Crews'.

A sub-category of Jazz with elements of classical ballet, lyrical dance is expressive, subtle but dynamic, focussing on musicality and emotion through music.

Utilises both the strong & controlled leg work of ballet coupled with contact and release, floor work, fall & recovery, changes in rhythm, speed, & direction and is very assertive.

Art of jumping, tumbling, and balancing. One who is skilled in feats of balance and agility in gymnastics.

Originating in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th Century it is a highly technical form of dance with it’s own vocabulary based on French terminology. It is the foundational technique of many dance genres.
